Here's a couple of things I highly recommend you should already have with your lenses. The day you purchase your new camera lens, the store will always suggest you buy it with at least a basic UV Filter. I'm not going to argue about the price and quality of the stuff they are pushing, but it's a very important thing to have. A basic UV filter isn't anything special that will dramatically change your images, but it will protect your front element from dirt, oil, dust, and most importantly scratches.

If you get a single scratch or mark on your lens, you're throwing good money out the door. Let the filter take the hit, and just replace the filter. If you walked away from the store without one, you need to at least throw something on there, and you'll find many for under a few dollars.

Next item to care for your lenses is a pouch or a sleeve. Even some high end Canon L lenses don't come with decent lens pouches, just a gray bag and a pull strap. Regardless, you need something, anything. Not only will it protect from scratches, moisture (throw in a silica gel bag into the pouch), but also dust. Dust finds it way into 'everything'. Neoprene pouches (same as surfing wet suit material) can be had for as little as $3 dollars.

Another inexpensive item you can grab for a single dollar or two - The Lens Pen Brush. Most of us don't have room for Compressed Air Cans. Those Liquid Bottles and Cleaning cloths are mainly used to clean up oil, but aren't the best for dusting off your lens. In fact, you should 'Dust before you Wipe'. Dust can sometimes be very abrasive and taking a cloth to it could be damaging.

If you see a few specs of dust on your filter, or in between the filter and your front lens element, don't reach for it with your finger. Don't try to swipe it with your T-Shirts (laundry softners have wax). Simply pull out your lens pen, push out the brush bristles, give it a good shake and then lightly dust away those tiny particles. You can brag about your thousand dollar cameras, lenses, and big budget shoots, but a spec of dust on your lens has the potential of ruining everything.

These lens pen brushes are so cheap, I purchased a dozen. I keep them everywhere. I'll use them to dust my laptop screens, keyboards, camera lenses, filters, and more. Small yet incredibly useful. There's a long list of things you should have as well, but these three very inexpensive items should give you a good start on maintaining your investment in lenses.

Rokinon 35mm F/1.4
find-price-button Rokinon 35mm F/1.4 For Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Sony, Pentax

Just talking about how well reviewed the Rokinon 85mm F/1.4 lens was, and now here's a bit about the Rokinon 35mm F/1.4. First off, this is the same as the Samyang but since it's a different name, you'll save about $100 dollars off the retail price.

For Nikon, the Rokinon 35mm F/1.4 lens actually has a 'focus confirmation chip' built in. Why did they not include this for the other brands? The Rokinon 85mm F/1.4 comes in at an excellent price range, and I would say very affordable. This new 35mm F/1.4 sounds good, but it's going to have some very very stiff competition. In this area you could still get the wildly popular Sigma 30mm F/1.4 for cheaper, and that comes with full Auto Focus.

The Sigma 30mm F/1.4 has already been proven out in the field and is a very sharp lens for cheaper than than the Rokinon 35mm. The Sigma 30mm is just a tad wider, but that's a good thing especially for cropped cameras. If prices don't change, in my opinion the Sigma is the lens to get. A quick note to Micro Four Thirds shooters - the Sigma 30mm F/1.4 has been discontinued for Four Thirds cameras. If you're considering this for a GH2 (would need an FT to MFT adapter), there might be a few left in retail spots like Amazon Here, or check a few eBay Auctions Here.

Double camera straps are definitely my choice. Having two cameras is faster than swapping lenses. Normally I have a 24-70mm on one side, and a 70-200mm on the other. I've had the Black Rapid double straps for quite some time now. At the time, it was the best thing I could find on the market, but I guess it's just a matter of time before someone else 'builds a better mousetrap'.

Rod sends in his review of the new CarrySpeed CS-Double straps, and there's no doubt it's definitely beefier than the BR's. The new CarrySpeed CS-Double padding looks pretty sweet too. Not very much padding over on the BR side. It's some rubber bubble type padding called Octopads to aid in grip and said to deter sweat by allowing air to vent. (I don't sweat much, not a problem for me).

Of course the real deal maker is a quick release adapter that still allows access to the tripod mounting hole - something my BR double strap totally lacks.

A tripod mount on a quick release adapter? Yeah this makes total sense. Even though these straps are convenient to carry two cameras, most pros still need quick access to a tripod or monopod. While the BR straps will run you around $130, the CarrySpeed CS-Double will only run you a nice $70 US. Actually just checked and the CS-Double is on sale right now for $54. [Thanks Rod]

Without going much into detail, you can cut shapes that will show up in your Bokeh. Here's an excellent video from Make Magazine on how to do just that. This was a very popular DIY thing with still photographers, you can find tons of examples on Flickr. This technique also can be used with Video on DSLRs too. Best used with a shallow depth of field lens and more prominent with highly lit objects (lights).

Another fun DIY Bokeh video (below) from Vimeo member SuperNormals. Now go cut some paper and see what you can come up with. A good start is to turn off all your lights, pull out those old Christmas Tree lights and blur them away with your shapes..

If you're the lazy type, you can always start out with an already made Bokeh Kit, like the one found below. There's also some additional examples on that product page.

find-price-button 1200 LED Color Changing Light 3200K-5400K

The latest 1200 LED light panel is now being offered in a Color changing model. An added dimmer knob allows the LED panel to switch and mix between two different sets of LED colored bulbs giving you a range between 3200K-5600K. Unfortunately like the other 1200 LED panel, it still does not have the V-Mount adapter to use this off the grid like the smaller 600 or 900. Something to keep in mind - since the 1200 panel uses two different rows of LED lights, when switching from one color over to the other, you'll be cutting the LED count down to half (600 tungsten LEDs and 600 Daylight LEDs). The question you're all thinking about - why not just use Gels? First, Gels cut down light quite a bit, and it's also one more thing to carry. Using a Bi-Color LED light like this 1200 can also mix in between temperatures. If color changing on the fly is an important part of your work flow, you might want to look into these below.

Vimeo member Just Basl Productions gives us his opinion on the VF Prime LCD view finder. This is a 3" LCD View Finder, so it will crop a bit on a T2i, T3i, or Canon 60D if you choose to use it. It's not the cheapest LCD Viewfinder solution, but it's also not the most expensive. This one has received excellent reviews so far. The mount is the typical stick on plastic frame type, and optional frames can be purchased seperately.

According to Amazon's list of Top Selling DSLR cameras, Nikon's D5100 has been numero uno for about a month and a half. I'm pretty sure these sales aren't for hard core DSLR video shooters, but possibly more for Photographers. Nikon is excellent when it comes to still image qualities. The #2 spot belongs to the Nikon D7000. Don't rule Canon out just yet. Among Amazon's 'Top Ten' DSLRs being sold, (in mixed order) 5 are from Nikon and the other 5 are from Canon (no 7D, 5D Mark II, or 60D in the top ten). Sony or Olympus cameras aren't mentioned until you get further down the list. You can find the entire list here: Top DSLR's On Amazon

You've probably already seen the video above, who hasn't? It's a great example of the capabilities shot on the GoPro HD Camera. One accessory that was recently released is the LCD BacPac and new firmware that opens up an entirely new world of features. From little things like losing the proper time/date when the battery is removed, to live HD video output. The new BacPac takes the guess work out of proper framing, and flying through the menu is a breeze compared to trying to decipher the old Mayan code on the front LCD. Video with Audio (yes with audio) can easily and instantly be played back to make sure you've got the shot.

If you've never seen the LCD BacPac in action, Olivia's review (below) runs through those 'must have' new features, and check out the SmallHD showing full HD live view from the little GoPro.

The LCD Bacpac comes with 4 different housing 'backs' from waterproof, waterproof for wrist housing, non waterproof housing, and non-waterproof housing for wrist mount. This amazing little camera performs equally well in the Sky, on the Streets, or even under water.

If you plan on using an External Monitor for some reason, don't go drilling holes through your Waterproof casing (like we did). GoPro has a special housing available for that also so you can run your video cables out to your External Monitor or maybe Asus Wi-Cast for some wireless HD Video Monitoring.

Yes it's an amazing camera if you can actually get a hold of one. Retailers are always out stock, and even if you can find a GH2 it's going for a pretty nice markup. Samy's seems to have 1 single Black (Body only) in stock for regular price. Here's your chance to save $200-$300 dollars on this beauty compared to going eBay rates. Lucky takers, follow the link below:
