I posted a short overview of the FotoDiox ND Throttle Fusion Adapter not too long ago. It's a clever lens adapter that will get your Canon EF Autofocus lenses mounted to your Sony camera bodies (like A7sII, A7RII) and allow you to fully communicate with the lens using the Sony dials buttons. The adapter supports autofocus, image stabilization, and adjustment of iris. But obviously the big difference is the built in Variable ND Filter that allows you to more ways to control your exposure. Check out the video below for more details.

Now there are times you may not need a variable ND filter on the camera, especially when shooting in dim lighting. So that makes this 24 Hour Flash Deal something to consider. With the purchase of an ND Throttle Auto Adapter, FotoDiox will throw in a Smart Adapter as well (basically same thing without the nd filter). This deal ends on Wednesday (8.17.16) at Midnight CST, and in order to get the deal you must ADD Both Items to Cart and use coupon code THROTTLEUP.

When it comes to smart adapters for Canon EF lenses that allow you to adjust the iris, your selection is limited and pricey. Over at the 2014 NAB Show in Las Vegas, I stopped by the Aputure booth to look at a brand new concept Canon EF to mirrorless Lens adapter.

Cheesycam Aputure Wireless Follow Focus Adapter

This new DEC concept is an adapter that not only can adjust the iris on the Canon EF lens, but can also adjust focus through a wireless remote. This is not the same method used from USB follow focus systems where it requires the lens to 'step' in increments. What I saw was very smooth, and they confirmed it is using a different more accurate method.

The adapter also offers a LANC cable for start / stop video. It uses an internal battery, so everything can be completely self contained. An LCD screen on the side of the adapter shows the lens focal distance and aperture value. The same LCD on the remote also shows this information. The remote can store A/B limits so that you can return to exact focus points. A throttle on the joystick controls how fast or slow to focus.

I'm not a fan of the single hand joystick, but they did mention on designing a more 'standard' wireless follow focus remote with marking disc. Do away with lens gears, 15mm rails, and external follow focus motors. An adapter like this will easily appeal to those working with Steadicams or Active Gimbal Stabilizers. So far this product is not yet available on the main website, so please leave your comments, suggestions, and feedback here in this article (comment here).

This thing took about 13 days to ship to California, but it's finally here and i'm pretty impressed. This adapter allows you to mount Canon EF lenses to the Sony NEX camera and control all of the aperture settings natively. I haven't tried it yet, but it should communicate with the lens and store EXIF information into your photos as well. As you can see from the video it works pretty flawlessly, responds very quick, and build quality is very nice. To enable IS when taking photos, you would hold the shutter half way down - or that's what I had to do to get it going. During Video Mode, the Image Stabilization is on as soon as you start recording.

I didn't have much time to test everything as i'm getting ready to fly out for PhotoPlus, but I did try to 'wig out' the adapter. When removing the lens while the camera was still powered on, the aperture controls didn't come back. The adapter does not like hot lens swaps. Simply powering the camera down doesn't always help, but removing the entire adapter from the camera body and then starting over always works. There is another Metabones adapter out there that can adapt EF lenses to NEX cameras, but it's about twice the price. I have not had the chance to test this on an FS100 or Sony FS700, but i'm hopeful it should work seamlessly. If you're shooting on the Sony NEX system, you might want to give this guy a try.
