Unboxing the BlackMagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera

Like many other people out there, I preordered my BlackMagic Design Pocket Cinema Cameras (while I was at NAB) the same day they announced it. With only a few cameras trickling in every week, it could be months before my name is up next. Fortunately, I had the chance to the BlackMagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera today thanks to DVEStore.com.

Apparently, the folks at the DVEStore has a few of these, with still a fairly reasonable small list of preorders to fill. There's a good chance the DVEStore will complete their list of preorders before larger retail stores can even scratch the surface with theirs.

If you're curious about seeing how long (or short) that list is, I suggest sending them an inquiry. The website can be found here: https://DVEStore.com.

Ok, now on to the next point of business. The BlackMagic Pocket Cinema Camera I have here is on loan. I have a short amount of time with it, but I've already reached out to a few friends to see if they can put it through the paces. We've planned a long weekend of travel and shooting a variety of footage with this camera.

I needed to buy additional bits just to get going on this camera (more info on that later), and also rented a few bits I think people will be interested in. The Pocket Cinema Camera does not shoot RAW (CinemaDNG) at this time, but the ProRes files are still impressive. A firmware update will add CinemaDNG capture.

We plan to shoot very short clips and upload them for you to download and play with (color grade). If you have any general questions about the product, leave some comments while I have it. Once I send this little guy back, I doubt I'll be seeing it again for several months. Over the next few days i'll be adding some additional information about working with this camera, so keep following...

@Miguel - I have this lens. It's pretty amazing.. I won't be able to change the aperture on the lens from the BPMCC though so it will be stuck at F/1.8. Unless I bring a canon body along and change the aperture then put it on the BMPCC. Unfortunately though, I don't have an MFT speed booster.

Plus one for the Metabones + Sigma 18-35 f/1.8. Please test it with this setup if you can grab hold of one.

  3. I'm really interested to see how my Arri 16s lenses perform with this camera - are you playing with any vintage lenses this weekend? I'm on the shortlist for an Aussie company and teh last update was sometime next week they hope to have them in - FINGERS CROSSED, got my arri adapter and woodencamera cage ready to roll!

  4. @Em, I just spoke with Stephanie (cool people) at DVE Store in regards to the waiting list (34) on the Pocket. I can't wait, so I'll be purchasing the 2.5k now. Thanks for the drop on @DVEStore.
As always, thanks for all the great work you do for our community. You ROCK!

@Keith - Sorry, the camera isn't as easy to start shooting with, so I don't have the true samples. It requires some crazy fast SDHC media which I should have tomorrow. Here's a post about a few things i've run into. httpss://cheesycam.com/blackmagic-design-pocket-cinema-camera-a-few-tips/

Oh man! Not even a frame-grab! Throw us a bone man!

I'm curious about its green screen capabilities as well. Isn't this camera 4-2-2 color space?

Looking forward to seeing the footage. Really enjoy your site.

Man... so glad that out of all the sites i frequent, you were one of the first. a most trusted opinion.

im sure this will naturally come through your reviews but just super curious on how focusing through the screen will be and also how good image stabilization will be through the lenses. such a small camera makes me think major earthquake footage mode. ha. especially if someone doesnt have ninja stealth miyagi hands like i do.

anyways.... stoked to see your review!

Perfectly fine and okay for those that like it. Just wondering is all. See 'em a lot and know they're popular for sure, just not my thing.

Regardless, once the stuff's out of the box and you're using it, that kind of info is priceless, so keep up the good work.

@MN - Some people don't care for it, some people love it. If it's not your thing, it's not necessary to hit the play button especially if the title includes the word Unboxing. Others find it both engaging and informative.

Did you notice there isn't a battery charger in the box? This means you need to use your camera to charge the battery. Not a big deal but what if you purchased a spare battery?
Also the camera does not include an HDMI cable. This camera uses a not-so-common micro HDMI, so if you plan to use an EVF the day you receive one you might want to order one prior to receiving.

Some unboxing videos have a bit of information if you look deeper into it.

Ps. I talked to Isaac on the phone at DVE Store and he was super super helpful and nice.

Love your info. You have a great blog and I'll always be a fan.

Especially when it comes to this product. I have a documentary to film next year and these have potential to be my A and B cams on that journey. Real world tech usage means a lot.

I'm curious though, and maybe this is a bit off topic, but perhaps you (and others) can fill me in on the appeal of filming opening up a box? I see that often here.

I must admit, I've never quite understood the popularity of this. (?)

Hey man can't wait for more videos on this camera and about what lenses and gear you like to use with it. I am seriously considering buying it I just want to see someone actually review it before I do.

  13. Good for you Emm!

Please try it out with the Sigma 18-35mm 1.8 and if possible with a Speed Booster/Lens Turbo.

    Looking forward to the tests!

How is the image quality on the LCD? Can you pull focus from it? Does it have a usable focus assist? Thanks and keep up the great content.
