Cheesycam Skater Dolly

Videos or Articles related to the Cheesycam Skater Type Video Camera Dollies.

If you have a table dolly, you'll know the importance of using a smooth surface to get the best footage. It won't solve every odd surfaced situation, but for most common imperfect surfaces that small table / skater dollies require, here's the Pico Surface Mat.

The Pico Surface Mat offers a thick Neoprene material with a heavy rubberized backing that will allow dollies to track sideways, forward, or back (basically straight across the mat) and reduce tracking vibrations normally caused by floor tiles, concrete, and other slightly textured surfaces.

Measures 46" inches across and 8.5" wide, and can be rolled up during travel. Due to the weight of this item, it's only available to ship to lower 48 US States (FREE SHIPPING). Check out the new Pico Surface Mat over at

Thinking about shooting with your GH2 camera longer than usual? Unfortunately Panasonic doesn't offer an OEM version battery grip to run dual batteries, but this GH2 External Battery Kit could help you out.

Christian writes in with positive news that this single battery lasted longer in a recent shoot, than several internal batteries from a previous shoot [Thanks Christian]. The kit comes with an 8500mAh rechargeable battery, GH2 Dummy battery, and necessary cables with DC 12V 6500mA, DC 9V 8500mA, and DC 5V 15000mA to power both the Panasonic GH2 camera, and 2/3" zoom professional video lenses. I got up a bit late today and missed out on the Rokinon 85mm Lighting Deal, but not all is lost. Coming up in a few hours is another Lighting Deal for the Rokinon 14mm available in a variety of mounts including Canon, Nikon, Sony, Olympus, and Pentax.

People have been pretty hip to these deals as of late, and the last Rokinon 35mm F/1.4 lens deal sold out in one minute. If you're interested in a wide angle fast aperture lens, be swift and check out the deal that will hit later today via Amazon (Click Here).

And there you have it. Another Canon DSLR Camera release. The new Canon EOS Rebel T4i comes with everything we've already come to expect from a typical Canon Rebel camera including swivel LCD screen (it's now Touch Screen LCD with Swipe, Pinch, and Zoom support), but the stand out feature is the continuous Auto Focus in Video mode. That's a first for any Canon DSLR.

Although it can provide continuous Auto Focus to standard EF and EF-S lenses, the best performance happens when used with an STM Lens. With the Touch Screen you can actually drag your focus point around and the T4i will follow. Canon has available the 18-135mm STM Lens with the kit, or the Canon 40mm F/2.8 STM Lens is also available (found here).

Cinevate's latest gear for the Sony FS100 blew me away when I saw it at NAB2012. I can't think of a better rig for the FS100. Not just a basic lens adapter to suit every lens that matters, but cheesed out and ready to build out with your rail system. Unfortunately i'm not a Sony FS100 owner, but maybe I can be swayed into the new FS700 when it drops, and hopefully Cinevate will have something like this ready for it.

Video Description:
The Sony FS100 Lens Adapter and Lens Mounts allow you to attach PL, OCT19, Nikon, Canon EOS, Canon FD, Minolta MD, Pentax K & Pentax M42 lenses to your camera.
We recently shot this piece demonstrating some of the shooting styles the rigs might lend to or some of the scenarios you could potentially use it in. We were really happy with the quality of footage we got from the various camera + lens combos.
The lens adapter rigs comes in 3 different flavours and during our June Specials sale we’re giving away the lens mounts. For the PL and OCT19 mounts we're offering 50% off.

Tony Carretti shares a find on a very inexpensive EM-320E shotgun condenser microphone for less than $20 dollars and claims he's getting better results than from his other Rode VideoMic on longer cable runs with XLR. [Thanks Tony]. Getting your microphone as close to the subject is key. In most cases any microphone is better than the built in microphone of the camera. It's also self powered so maybe it provides a bit of clean gain over the noisy internal amp of the DSLR.

[Update] Tony also shares another test along with the Zoom H4n as reference.

The EM-320E, comes with a Black windscreen, 20' XLR to 1/4" mic cable, and a 1/4" to 3.5mm adapter. If you don't have any microphone, Tony seems to think it's worth the bang for the buck, and you can find them on eBay (click here).

Here's a product some of you might find interesting, although I have to admit it's probably not too far off for DIY makers to craft up their own version. The Magnifty is a large Magnifier attached on 15mm rails magnifies the image on your LCD to help you get better focus. Other products like the Cinevate Cyclops or the Jag35 MonitorX offer the same method of magnifying the image into a large view, but attach directly to the camera's LCD.

Cinevate Cyclops and Jag35 MonitorX

The Magnifty uses 15mm rods to slide forward or back to adjust the magnification, and also offers a much larger view. One major benefit to using such analogue techniques is that you know you're getting the proper exposure and color from the camera's LCD than you would with most cheaper electronic Monitors. Of course if you work indoors, you don't have to think twice about it, but for outdoor use you should be cautious of your equipment. Check out the Magnifty at their eBay store following the link (click here).

I purchased a few Vinyl covered Scuba Dive weights to be used as a DIY counterweight on a Gini Rig (seen here), and also ended up also using them for the DIY Crane (seen here). It's much more expensive than basic round Gym weights, but they are smaller and have a much better aesthetic appeal when mounted to a rig. I did of course have to drill through the Dive weight to mount a 15mm clamp, so there's a little DIY involved with that.

Another option for a counter weight solution is the Opteka 4lb brick. Originally designed to work with one the Opteka CXS Shoulder Rigs, I have other plans for it.

It comes with a solid metal bracket, has several through holes, a slotted center, and quite a few 1/4x20 threaded ports to make mounting the brick to your project much simpler. I'm not a fan of the spray painted logo, but it's easy to sand off for the complete flat black finish. I have two here that can be stacked together for one of my larger Jibs.
