I was looking for a pretty inexpensive USB 3.0 card reader that can support Compact Flash, SDXC, and SDHC and decided to test the USPEED Multi Reader
I'm using it with the new MacBook Pro Retina, and files are transferred more than twice as fast from the Compact Flash. For SDHC, the MacBook has a built in reader and the speed is just about the same (no benefit there if all you use is SDHC). On our iMac the USB reader works great, but the cable built into the unit is a bit short so it won't rest flat on your desk. It just sort of hangs. Anyone have issues with it reading a card? I just got mine and it won't read my SanDisk cards.

You mean on your iMac it's transferring at faster USB2 speeds since of course your iMac doesn't have USB3. So this reader is faster than your older USB2 speed rated card readers?

Post author@Matt - I looked at the Kingston one too, but two out of three reviews which mentioned the Macbook Retina had issues. Aside from that it probably works great with every other system.

That Kingston one is good, it's cable is longer and detachable so you could use any USB 3.0 cable that fits.

Anyone know if there are any real differences between cheaper and more expensive USB 3.0 card readers? I had my eye on the Kingston FCR-HS3 card reader. It looks flashy, but that's about it.

Indeed, one is really cheap and decent! You could buy two of these than one of Lexar's heh.. Although if you have one of those 1000x CFs, the Lexar one would probably work better (after firmware update)!

Post author@Zane - I was checking out the Lexar also, but some of the reviews kept me skeptical. Size and price also leaned me over to this one for trial. Can't complain so far.

Hmm, I prefer the Lexar dual slot (SD and CF) USB 3.0 reader. It has a detachable cable and works great with my 64GB 400x Lexar Professional CF cards! They recently introduced a firmware update to the reader for UDMA7 support.
