Here's a little product sent in from Arni. Tascam's little iXZ adapter provides a Phantom Power XLR or 1/4" interface turning your iPhone, iPad, or even iPod touch into a portable recorder. The iXZ Phantom power is provided by a few AA batteries, and the unit has adjustable levels (gain), along with a headphone monitoring port on the backside.

Umm, is it just me or does that look like a fairly standard output plug? I guess this means it could be a cheap way to add XLR phantom power, adjustable pre-amp gain, and headphone monitoring to your DSLR camera (if you don't suffer from AGC). If it's not standard, Arni also points out an adapter that could get things back on track found here.

    @Bob Moore - The headphone out is also an input. The headphones that came with your iPhone has a microphone for you to talk into (hands free). So the port will accept a microphone input.

    How does this interface with the iPad, iPhone etc. If the output connector is a 1/8" plug, it would have to input thru the iPad headphone jack...which is an output port, right? Am I missing something here?

    Conclusion: in combination with the Zoom H1 it is a very nice package. Could just have some more gain.

    Tried plugging it into my Canon T2i. Unfortunately, it did not work. Works great with iPad Garage Band, though.

    @Koitz - I have the first Galaxy S. I too and curious about this little box to see what is possible.

    I have seen some iPhone to XLR adapters with monitor output and I suspect i doesn't work with our DSLR directly. These adaptors use a 4-pole jack because it drives GROUND, LEFT OUT, RIGHT OUT and MIC INPUT, like a handsfree.

    So, it seems monitor output depends on iPhone (pay attention adaptor haven't got any headphone control). Anyway, it's possible we could use to plug a XLR input.

    In addition, Emm, do you have a Samsung i9000 (Galaxy S or Captivate)? Do you plain to buy a Tascam iXZ?? I have an i9000 and I would like to know how iXZ works with it, because pinout is similar to iPhone.

    The iPhone/iPod Touch mic cable (TRRS) won't work without an adapter because what is typically the ground sleeve, is both the mic connection and the ground connection.

    If you're handy with a soldering iron, the internal connections of the TRRS cable can probably be changed to the normal connection scheme, shorting the sleeve and ring closest to it. The only question becomes, is the headphone output the output from the box itself or does it feed through what comes out of the iPhone/iPod Touch?

    If this makes nice enough audio, then it makes the case for picking up older gen2 or newer iPod touches to use as field recorders.

    It seems like a potential winner except I'm placing money on the plug being a ttrs connector. Which may not work on a dslr, zoom h1, or tascam dr05. too bad we have to wait for the iPhone 5 to get 48k 16bit. 44.1 isn't really noticeable but certain applications like stock footage requires it.

    1:30am=tired - ok line out is monitor stereo and mic out is 3.5mm 4 Pole Plug, 150mm. Anyways, some nice output options. Now we just need a review on quality and performance of the pre-amp circuitry. Interesting.

    Didn't see a DC input jack in the pictures. sad. Actually plug looks 3.5mm stereo lol (in-device mix to dual-mono?) edit: just checked tascam site and it says, LINE-OUT: "1/8" (3.5mm) stereo mini jack" While bulky...it be a easy way to add XLR to a Zoom h1 also.
