For most video shooters, one of the first creative prime lenses to dive into would be a 50mm. It offers nice framing, good focal distance (not too wide not too far), and typically these lenses are accompanied by a a wide aperture for that super shallow DOF 'depth of field' look.

Until now Samyang has left this lens out of their product lineup, but today they've finally made available the 50mm T/1.5 Cine Lens for Canon, Nikon, Sony, and Micro Four-Third cameras. You can find more information about the new Samyang 50mm T/1.5 Cine Lenses at B&H (here)

Product Description:
The 50mm T1.5 AS UMC Cine Lens from Samyang is a fast manual focus prime lens. It provides a maximum aperture of T1.5 for effective low light capture and shallow depth of field control and an 8 blade iris for attractive bokeh. Optimized for cinema and video applications, the focus and aperture control rings are outfitted with industry standard gearing, which provides an interface for working with a traditional follow focus. The aperture control ring has also been de-clicked, which enables smooth iris pulls. In addition, bright aperture and distance markings are printed on the lens barrel facing laterally to facilitate easier control by a focus puller.

If you caught my recent video shot entirely on the BlackMagic Pocket Cinema, you'll probably find quite a few wide angle shots. That's because I tried very hard to include only native MFT lenses especially the Panasonic 7-14mm & Rokinon 8mm Fisheye.

For anyone looking to adapt non-MFT Lenses (without a speed booster) to the BlackMagic Pocket Cinema Camera, here's what it will look like through a full frame Canon 5D Mark II, Panasonic GH3, and BlackMagic Pocket Cinema Camera.

[Note] In the field of view test, some of the images may appear soft, this is not the fault of the camera. The Rokinon 85mm on a BMPC will be at an approximate 240mm focal distance, and with a Variable ND filter on the lens, things go soft. It's best to use good quality static ND Filters.

In other parts of the video a Canon 70-200mm F/2.8 was used throwing it somewhere close to the 600mm focal range. Since an ND Filter was not used, results were much sharper from the BlackMagic Pocket Cinema Camera.

Judging from the distance of the 5D Mark II, the tripod was quite a distance away. Using the Rokinon 35mm and 85mm lenses, you can tell there is quite a crop factor to the smaller BMPC - more than you would get from a GH3. The BMPC has even more crop than from the original BlackMagic Cinema Camera. That's something to keep in mind if you plan to work in tight spaces. Invest in the right glass, or look for a Speed Booster / Focal Reducer (found here on eBay).

Since the Rokinon 24mm F/1.4 had been released, i've kept a close eye on it. I haven't decided to pick it up just yet mainly because I was working with the Full Frame cameras. Now that i've been using the BlackMagic Design Cinema camera and Micro Four Thirds GH3, i'm finding this focal length is much needed.

Typically ranging $600+ dollars, today there is a discount for the Samyang branded version for just $499. That's a pretty decent price for this lens. Sale is for the next couple of weeks, and you can check it out via B&H (click here).

Quick look at the new Rokinon 35mm T/1.5 Cine Lens. Basically same glass elements compared to their standard 35mm F/1.4 Photo lens. It's just a small $50 dollar difference in price, with a few Cine style features such as de-clicked aperture, lens gears on focus and aperture rings, and indicator markings placed towards the side.

Rokinon's first Cine lens was an 8mm T/3.8, but along with this 35mm F/1.5, they have also just made available their new 14mm T/3.1 and 24mm T/1.5 Cine lenses which just recently became available to purchase. Those wide angle 8mm and 14mm might come in handy for the new BlackMagic Cinema Camera. Check out the complete Rokinon Cine Lens collection in stock over at B&H (Click Here).
