@ Bruce Philpott - That really depends on the angle of the light source that is flaring. In actual practice though it's really common to need to flag a light source that's hitting your lens even with a standard hood attached. It's not a perfect replacement for a set of flags on c-stands, but it does most of what a matte box would do with a lot less bulk - much like the Dinkum ones linked to above which are in very common use.

It attaches to a lens hood. The OEM hood is designed to come right down to nearly vignetting the shot. I don't see that this product could help at all with primes, and not even with zooms except for the rare case where you're zoomed to maximum tele (where the OEM hood can't be that tight because it has to not vignette when you're zoomed to wide).

I just picked up a couple of these last week as an alternative to a bulky matte box. They work well and he's not kidding - once it's velcro'd down it won't rotate or fall off. The only real caveat is that they won't work with lenses whose front element rotates when focusing - like the Canon 50/1.8. For one thing, you would obviously be rotating the shade this way, but there is also not much for the velcro to strap to. It works best by attaching it to a lens hood rather than the lens itself.
